Magpie print drypoint.  ‘Pica Pica’ is the Latin name for Magpie. Magpies are not always popular. Seeing one on it’s own is a bad omen throughout Europe. However, this hasn’t always been the case for a solitary magpie. In some other cultures they may bring good fortune and fearlessness.  There is also a beautiful song about them with the name Pica Pica by La Niña.
Etching using a drypoint tool onto an aluminium place is the first stage.  I then ink and wipe the plate, then put it through  an  etching press to create a limited edition of just 4.  The press I use is a Gunning Etching Press in Glasgow.  Drypoint is an Intaglio process which requires an huge amount of pressure to draw out the ink onto the damp paper.
Each print is slightly different from the other due to the process. I hand paint each  tail using Sennelier Watercolours to create the magical tones of their tails.

Caligo Traditional Etching Ink (linseed based)
measurements approx – 7 1/2 x 7 inches
printed on Fabriano Unica printmaking paper
